Character Name: Suzaku Kururugi/"Zero"
Series: Code Geass
Character Age: 18-19
Canon Point: Post-Series
Language: Japanese, English
History: Suzaku Kururugi is the only son of Japan's last Prime Minister before it was conquered and occupied by the Holy Britannian Empire. During the war, Genbu Kururugi adopted a policy in which Japan would fight to the death rather than surrender, without regard to casualties or cost. Still only a child, Suzaku tried to persuade his father to choose a different option, which Genbu ignored. Thinking he had no other choice, Suzaku killed his father during an argument, which triggered Japan's unconditional surrender and the loss of all rights for its citizens -- ten-year-old Suzaku included. In the chaos of the Britannian invasion, a handful of nationalists whisked Suzaku away and covered up his crime -- the world believes Genbu Kururugi committed suicide rather than submit to the enemy. Suzaku passed from one foster family to another and eventually joined the nationalists in their insurgent campaign against Britannia. However, his father's blood on his hands and the methods of the terrorists made Suzaku question the point of "victory by any means". He came to believe in order to make a real difference, one had to work within the system. Believing the high road was the best way, Suzaku chose to become an Honorary Britannian and join the Imperial military. His Japanese foster family kicked him out, and the nationalists claimed he'd betrayed his country. While trying to work his way up the ranks, Suzaku was reunited with his childhood friends -- an exiled Britannian prince named Lelouch vi Britannia, and his younger sister, Nunnally vi Britannia. The Kururugi family took in the pair before the war as hostages, and the three children had become close.
For the better part of a year, Suzaku and Lelouch rekindled their friendship, and Suzaku rose to greater positions of power. He had become the pilot of Britannia's strongest Knightmare Frame, Lancelot, and caught the attention of Britannia's Third Princess, Euphemia li Britannia. When he consented to become her Knight, Suzaku committed himself to her vision: a more peaceful, more equal world. He weathered racism from the Britannians and derision from the Japanese, believing in his own heart he wasn't worthy of the trust and status Euphemia gave him, but he continued forward, believing his course to be the right one.
In the meantime, Lelouch had acquired a power called "geass", which manifested in him as the power of absolute obedience -- whatever order Lelouch gave, the recipient would follow it without question. With it, he intended to destroy the Britannian Empire and his own father. He adopted the persona of the masked terrorist, Zero, and sought to either recruit Suzaku to his cause, or at least, capture him and keep him out of the fight. On more than one occasion, Lelouch noticed a change in Suzaku's personality; the child he'd known had been selfish and impatient, never one to put others before him. But in their seven years apart, Suzaku had become completely deferential, and showed a pattern of putting himself in the most dangerous situations. In an attempt to atone for his father's death, Suzaku looked for a way to get himself killed during battle. However, his own skills and protection from his superiors prevented such a thing. Until one incident, where Suzaku was ordered to sacrifice himself to kill Zero, Lelouch's frustration boiled over, and he used his geass power to order Suzaku to "live". The unintended consequence of this was that Suzaku was now forced to use whatever means necessary to save his own life.
For Suzaku, this began the complete unraveling all his convictions. He had also begun to suspect Lelouch might be Zero, but he forced himself to not believe it. And then Euphemia mysteriously decided to try and kill all Japanese people, only to be killed by Zero. A strange person named V.V. revealed the existence of "geass" and that Lelouch was, in fact, who Suzaku thought he was. Consumed with grief and hatred, Suzaku confronted Lelouch, and captured him. Still working within the system, but no longer content to advance strictly by merit, Suzaku bargained with the Britannian Emperor to become one of the twelve Knights of the Round, the highest-ranking members of the military with the exception of the Britannian Royal Family. Suzaku was given the rank of brigadier general, and the title of Knight of Seven. His ultimate goal was to become Knight of One, who could choose any Area within the Empire and assume direct control over it. For Suzaku, the choice would be simple: he would choose Japan. But even after "killing" Zero, and allowing the Emperor to rewrite Lelouch's memories, Lelouch proved to be a stronger adversary and Suzaku was pulled back in to determine whether or not Lelouch had regained his memories and the mantle of Zero. Unable to act strictly openly, Suzaku attempted to bait Lelouch... with Nunnally, even going so far as to support her bid to become the Viceroy of Japan, thus setting Lelouch up against his sister.
While still operating within the confines of Britannia's laws, Suzaku was becoming more and more ruthless in his methods, all for the sake of catching Lelouch out. When Lelouch, finally, admitted to being Zero in an attempt to get Suzaku to promise to protect Nunnally, Suzaku chose to confront him, once again, in person. But when he tried to get answers from Lelouch about what had happened to Euphemia, and why Lelouch had ordered him to live, he received evasive answers. Lelouch took responsibility, but in a way that convinced Suzaku that he was also lying out of guilt. And then, as the two were preparing to reconcile -- if only for Nunnally's sake -- Suzaku discovered the Britannians had used him as bait to catch Zero. Lelouch believed Suzaku betrayed him, and Suzaku was once again trying to figure out just what his purpose was. After Lelouch escaped, Suzaku was, reluctantly, convinced to tell Schneizel el Britannia about geass. He also, reluctantly, accepted the outfitting of Lancelot with a weapon of potentially devastating power. He believed it was better that he accept it rather than someone else, as he would also know not to use it against the Japanese.
Except Suzaku did use it, in an attempt to save himself from being killed. During the battle, he warned Lelouch that he carried a terrible weapon, and Lelouch refused to believe him (given he thought Suzaku had betrayed him), and ordered his forces to kill Suzaku. When it seemed that Suzaku would lose, the "live" geass activated, and Suzaku detonated the F.L.E.I.J.A. weapon, killing 35 million people. At the time, both Suzaku and Lelouch believed Nunnally was killed in the blast.
With that, Suzaku stopped believing that "victory at any cost" was so reprehensible. It seemed as though he was the only one not operating by that method, and having lost everything, the only thing left was to win. He offered to kill the Emperor on Schneizel's behalf, in exchange for being promoted to Knight of One. Schneizel agreed, and Suzaku once again set out on a shaky path. His attempt to kill the Emperor failed, but Lelouch's did not. And Suzaku finally found a path he could accept. He agreed to help Lelouch with his endgame: the Zero Requiem. The plan was to make Lelouch the ruler not only of Britannia, but of the entire world. And the reign would be so toxic, so awful and despotic, that with the hatred of humanity directed at Lelouch, a hero could emerge to slay the monster, and people would be more willing to work together to solve their problems. Suzaku stood by Lelouch's side as Knight of Zero, helping Lelouch consolidate more and more power, until the last part of the plan came to pass: Suzaku faked his own death, leaving Lelouch alone and hated... and reappeared as Zero, who Lelouch had always shaped as a warrior for justice against tyranny.
Suzaku Kururugi "died", leaving only the heroic symbol of Zero, who killed the demonic Emperor Lelouch. The man behind the mask had no name, no future, no happiness aside from serving as the embodiment of the people's hope. And Suzaku accepted that burden, as his way to finally be able to atone for everything he'd done.
Personality:
Six months since the death of Lelouch, Suzaku has fully embraced becoming "Zero". The sentimentality and gentleness he is truly capable of have not left him, but he has shut them out. Though no one would be able to tell if he teared up or smiled or looked on Nunnally with pride, those are all emotions he's not allowed to have any more. Part of accounting for his actions is the sacrifice of his own happiness for the sake of others. And despite having desperately flailed for purpose for two years, he is generally very good at following orders once they're given. Zero must appear strong and resolute. Inhuman in all the most respectable ways, and Suzaku is devoted to that.
If someone could crack through that sense of purpose, they would find a genuinely good, albeit flawed, human being. Despite never really having formal or consistent schooling, once he began to attend Ashford Academy, he applied himself to his studies in addition to a stressful and demanding job with the military, and managed to excel. Much of his self-sacrificing behavior is wrapped up in the feeling of it being deserved (he accepts hatred from Britannians and Japanese alike without fighting back or trying to explain, for instance) but some of it is genuine concern and empathy for others. Perhaps at Ashford he believed the bullying he got from his classmates was what he deserved, but he also didn't wish to cause trouble for Lelouch and Nunnally and somehow reveal their heritage. The friends he's made among the Student Council are real, and their affection for him is reciprocated, even after he's no longer able to attend.
Even when dealing with people he perceives as his enemies -- particularly Lelouch and Kallen -- he's not entirely heartless. Part of his continued downward spiral in the second season is how reluctant he is to just report his suspicions about Lelouch to someone. He has to be certain. He has to have proof before he'll turn Lelouch over to Britannia, risking Lelouch but also Nunnally. Schneizel and Kanon reproach him for it. His divided loyalties are not only Japan and Britannia, but also Lelouch as a friend and also as someone he can't forgive.
Skills:
- Physical: Suzaku is ridiculous. He can sprint fast enough to dodge bullets and run up walls, break small machinery and blades with a kick, drop from ceilings without injury, and lift at least the weight of two grown adults (one handed!). He's trained in martial arts and Western swordplay, as well as marksmanship, mechanical repair, and an assortment of weaponry.
- Geass: Suzaku still carries the geass Lelouch placed on him; the blanket order to "live". While intended to trump his suicidal urges, it also makes Suzaku very, very difficult to kill. If he believes his life is in danger, Suzaku will first and foremost act to save his own life (whether he wants to or not). Sometimes that allows for the protection of others, sometimes it doesn't. He can control the geass to an extent, and also uses it to give him an edge during battle.
IC Permissions:
Physical contact: Go for it. Suzaku himself isn't touchy-feely (anymore) but if the other person's not a jerk, he'll suffer through it.
Fighting: Totally up for it. Just remember, he's ridiculous.
Injuring: Love it, let's do it.
Killing: Possible with planning. His geass makes it very difficult.
Mind-reading: All for it. The only thing that would be a hard "no" is permanent memory wipe/altering.
Romancing: Not going to say no, but it'd be really difficult.
